At Second U Foundation, we know that Second chances matter. Our mission is to educate, certify, and secure employment for formerly incarcerated people as certified personal trainers.
Through opportunity, empowerment, and community-we seek to eliminate recidivism.
Recidivism:the tendency for someone convicted to reoffend
We envision opening doors, and providing Second chances for formerly incarcerated people. Led by our core values of integrity, teamwork, empowerment, tenacity, and results, we are working to end recidivism in New York City.
We operate from a place of integrity and transparency, which supports in building consistency, and strengthens commitment.
Working as a team is at our core. We create a culture of community and unity among ourselves and actualize the collective strength of team.
We empower through skills that lead to successful, long lasting careers.
We passionately put in the work to recruit, educate, and employ while working to eliminate recidivism.
We believe in productivity through the proper execution that demonstrates results.
Helping people accomplish their goals and improve their lives drew me to fitness. I am passionate about being a good role model for my children, and family, by demonstrating a hard work ethic that drives me to be better.
It’s very rewarding to be part of the Second U Community, to give back, and to be connected to a community of people starting a new chapter in their lives, just like I did.
I was drawn to fitness by my desire to become a better version of myself. I entered prison at the age of 22, an overweight young woman with no self-esteem, who believed that associating love with violence was normal. However, in my efforts to become a better me I learned that love doesn’t hurt, and there was nothing normal about what I endured in my young life. Through various therapeutic programs I’ve acquired knowledge and tools that continue to assist me in my daily decision making. I learned that I could do whatever I put my mind to, so wanting to step it up a notch, I decided to put my body to the test. Fitness not only strengthened my body physically, it strengthened me emotionally, mentally, and I haven’t looked back since.
Through my passion for fitness I started helping other women achieve their weight goals. My passion became my purpose in life, and today I focus on finding new ways to make a difference in the lives of women all over the world through fitness.
Being a part of the Second U community has been a really special opportunity for me. I am among some of the best people in the world (regardless to our past). Through Second U we are given a second chance, where through our efforts to continue evolving, we utilize our ability to help others. I couldn’t be part of a more amazing family.
Being a part of the Second U community is everything to me. During my extended stay in prison I learned the value of Fitness and Nutrition. Developing a workout regimen, and following it religiously on a daily basis, behind the walls helped keep me focused, energized me, and got me in the best shape of my life. Once I came out, it was important for me to give back in any way possible to help my brothers who were reentering society.
I was blessed in meeting Hector nearly 10 years ago behind the walls when his idea for this fledgling organization was just starting to sprout. Reconnecting with him years later made me realize what a great opportunity this was to help give back to others, especially those in whose shoes I’ve already walked. Being a part of A Second U has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It has not only helped me help others become better personal trainers, but it has helped me in my drive and desire to re-enter the medical field in the near future. One thing is for sure, Second U will always be a part of me and I will always be a part of it.
I found fitness while I was serving my 151-month federal sentence. At first it was recreational, then it became so much more. It became my therapy. It became my escape when the prison walls made me feel claustrophobic.
I’m passionate about staying free, not just physically, but mentally. I realized that my physical incarceration was a byproduct of me being mentally incarcerated by the culture of the environment I was raised in. I knew I would never be free until I freed my mind from that train of thought. I’m passionate about letting those who are in the same situation know that that mentality isn’t the only way.
Being apart of the Second U is a beautiful thing. You’re surrounded by brothers and sisters who have a something to prove, not to society, but to ourselves. We are often prejudged by the decisions we once made, rather than what we became from lessons learned from those decisions. This community was created with the purpose of welcoming formally incarcerated men and women home, giving support and encouragement while they proceed to build a second life, knowing that fuels our passion.
